Game Play Instructions

How to Play

Play Daily Kakuro online for free. Daily Kakuro is a crossword-type math puzzle. Fill in each row with the numbers 1 through 9. Make sure that the numbers add up to the sum mentioned in the top or left of each row. Each number can only appear once in any answer, but a number can appear multiple times in a single row or column across multiple separate answers. This game is rendered in mobile-friendly HTML5, so it offers cross-device gameplay. You can play it on mobile devices like Apple iPhones, Google Android powered cell phones from manufactures like Samsung, tablets like the iPad or Kindle Fire, laptops, and Windows-powered desktop computers. All game files are stored locally in your web browser cache. This game works in Apple Safari, Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge, Mozilla Firefox, Opera and other modern web browsers.

  • Starting the Game
    • On the welcome screen, choose a difficulty level to begin:
      • Easy
      • Medium
      • Hard
      • Expert
      • Select Help to read the game’s instructions.
      • Select Print Today’s Kakuro to create a paper copy of the day’s puzzle.
      • Change the game’s language through the drop-down list on the top right corner of the screen:
        • English
          • Spanish
          • Dutch
          • French
          • Italian
          • German
          • Russian
          • Hindi/English
          • Polish
          • Turkish
          • Game Controls
            • Desktop
              • With your mouse:
                • Left click to select a cell.
                • Left click on any number on the number pad to place in a “candidate” answer. You can place multiple candidate answers in any cell.
                • Left click on the number again to finalize your answer.
                • Left click on it a third time to clear the cell.
                • With your keyboard:
                  • On a selected cell, type in the number to place it in as a candidate.
                  • Type on the same number again to finalize your answer.
                  • Use the delete or backspace keys to clear your answer.
                  • Touchscreen devices
                    • With your fingers:
                      • Tap on a cell to select it.
                      • Tap on any number on the number pad to place in a candidate answer.
                      • Tap on the number again to finalize your answer.
                      • Controls & indicators
                        • The game’s indicators are located on the left side of the screen. From the top, these are as follows:
                          • The game’s logo
                          • The number pad
                          • The present date
                          • The timer
                          • The first row of buttons, from left to right:
                            • Pause button: Momentarily stop the game’s timer.
                            • Reset button: Return everything to the way it was when you began.
                            • Query button: Check if your answers are correct.
                            • The second row of buttons, from left to right:
                              • Music button: Toggle the game’s music.
                              • Sound effects button: Toggle the game’s audio cues.
                              • Enlarge button: Switch between windowed and full screen modes
                              • Game Play
                                • Generating puzzles
                                  • The game generates a different puzzle for every day of the year.
                                  • You can choose up to 365 to 366 different puzzles for each difficulty level.
                                  • You can play again by choosing the puzzle of a different day on the calendar or by selecting next on the winning screen.
                                  • Objective
                                    • Fill the entire grid with the numbers 1 through 9.
                                    • The grid is divided into rows, similar to those in crossword puzzles. The rows can go both across or down.
                                    • The sum of each row’s numbers should equal the number show at the left or top of each row.
                                    • Numbers cannot appear more than once per row.
                                      • Input
                                        • You can place in candidate (guess) answers before placing in your final answer.
                                        • Candidate numbers are small. You can have several of them at once.
                                        • As you eliminate guesses, you can remove candidate numbers until you have one left.
                                          • To remove candidates, clear the cell and add in the remaining candidate answers.
                                          • If you only have a single candidate left, select that same number again to make it your final answer.
                                          • Clues
                                            • Each row across or down has a clue tied to it. The number shown there is the sum of all the numbers in the row.
                                            • Select each of the number clues to see the possible combinations of valid numbers that add up to the sum.
                                            • Compare each of the addends to the neighbors to help you narrow down the possible candidates in each cell.
                                            • Tips
                                              • Start with the numbers with the smallest number of possible addends and fill that in first. If a number only has 2 input fields then the number of options are limited. Also if the number has 3 input digits and is limited to 6 or 7 there is only a few combinations which can work.
                                              • Check out the clues of overlapping numbers to find numbers common to them.
                                                • Compare longer numbers with shorter ones. Enter the values of the shorter numbers first. This will help you narrow down which of the possible addition chains are valid.
                                                • Place the common numbers in the places where they overlap.
                                                • Use the process of elimination to remove possible addends until you only have one left.
                                                • If you narrowed your choice to 2 possible answers, use the query option to check if your answer is correct. If you’re wrong the first time, the other one is automatically correct. This only applies if you’re playing the game on-site.

                                                    • This game is a great way for children to practice addition and subtraction while playing.
